Max Von Eelking was a captain in the Saxon-Meiningen Army and corresponding member of the Historical Society of New York. In 1863, he published (in Hanover, Germany) a large two-volume history of the activities of the various German regiments that fought for the British in the American Revolution. The present volume is a translation and abridgement of that work and was first published in New York in 1893 by J. D. Rosengarten. This interesting history is based on about thirty German manuscript sources-journals, diaries, letters and reports-compiled by officers and enlisted men who served in the German regiments from Hesse, Brunswick, Waldeck, Ansbach-Bayreuth, and Anhalt-Zerbst. It provides a unique view of the German participation as recorded by the German soldiers themselves. The abridgement done by Rosengarten consisted mainly of eliminating the general history of the American Revolution which is well known to Americans, so that the volume now consists predominantly of material on the German participation. Appended to the historical text is a list of several hundred officers who served in the German regiments. The antiquarian, Larned, described this book as "the best source of information in the field..."

The first white pioneers to settle the Mendon prairie arrived in 1829. By 1833, lots in the 160-acre village of Mendon were being sold to more and more newcomers. Many of these early settlers were from Kentucky and Connecticut. In 1867, Mendon was incorporated as a town. The first privately owned newspaper in Mendon, the Mendon Enterprise, was published in 1877. The following year its name changed to the Mendon Dispatch. While conducting their own genealogical research in twenty-five years' worth of early issues of these newspapers, Mrs. Beal and Mrs. Kirchner realized that other genealogists might be interested in the wealth of family names and interesting information they were discovering. Accordingly, they created this alphabetical listing, which contains more than three thousand names. The abstracted wedding or related announcements from the newspapers are transcribed under the names of the husbands, but brides' names are usually listed, too, with cross-references to their husbands' names. Most of the abstracts are wedding announcements, but significant anniversaries and an occasional divorce are listed as well. The amount of information in individual abstracts varies widely but usually includes the names of bride and groom, with their place of origin and the wedding date. Many listings are much more gossipy and contain such information as occupations, ages, honeymoon plans, previous marriages and officiating clergy. Additionally, all listings include the newspaper's publication date. (1997), 2015, 5¿x8¿, paper, alphabetical 238 pp.

While conducting research on their own families in early Illinois newspapers, Mrs. Beals and Mrs. Kirchner realized that others could benefit from the wealth of genealogical material they had discovered. This volume is the result of their continuing efforts to make this valuable information on Illinois families available to fellow researchers and historians. This is an extensive collection of death notices, and related items, gleaned from the pages of The Camp Point Journal newspaper, 1893 to 1903. Most entries list: date, time and cause of death, with assorted supplemental information concerning the life and family of the deceased. Information on the deceased often includes: date of birth and parents' names; names of surviving spouses, relatives and children; circumstances leading to death, such as disease, accidental injury, murder or execution; criminal records; religious affiliation; place of burial; and assorted anecdotes illustrating the roles of the deceased in their community. A valuable resource for family historians and a fascinating look at how people lived and died in Adams County at the turn of the century. A full-name index adds to the value of this work. (1999), 2019, 5¿x8¿, paper, index, 378 pp

The author took a first-hand approach to compiling this list of 108 family, church, and public cemeteries in Cumberland County, Maine, and the people buried therein; over countless weekends for two and a half years, she traveled all over the county in search of the forgotten gravestones. Sometimes she could not locate a long-abandoned cemetery, and sometimes the inscriptions were impossible to read, but she supplemented these gaps with information from turn-of-the-century newspaper articles, obituaries, and town histories. Some of the very old cemeteries listed in this book, through negligence and vandalism, are in danger of being lost to the public, but Mrs. Ketover's labors insure that these important markers of the past will remain a valuable genealogical resource. Neatly organized by cemetery name, each list notes whether or not the cemetery could be found and the method of compilation used, whether stone by stone transcription or written record. In addition to transcribing names and dates from the stones, the author has included, when available, names of relatives of the deceased, inscriptions from memorial markers, cemetery histories, and notes about the condition of the cemetery or particular stones. A few maps, a listing of cemetery names arranged by town, and a surname index make the reader's search for particular information easier.
