The compartmentation of genetic information is a fundamental feature of the eukaryotic cell. The metabolic capacity of a eukaryotic (plant) cell and the steps leading to it are overwhelmingly an endeavour of a joint genetic cooperation between nucleus/cytosol, plastids, and mitochondria. Alter­ ation of the genetic material in anyone of these compartments or exchange of organelles between species can seriously affect harmoniously balanced growth of an organism. Although the biological significance of this genetic design has been vividly evident since the discovery of non-Mendelian inheritance by Baur and Correns at the beginning of this century, and became indisputable in principle after Renner's work on interspecific nuclear/plastid hybrids (summarized in his classical article in 1934), studies on the genetics of organelles have long suffered from the lack of respectabil­ ity. Non-Mendelian inheritance was considered a research sideline~ifnot a freak~by most geneticists, which becomes evident when one consults common textbooks. For instance, these have usually impeccable accounts of photosynthetic and respiratory energy conversion in chloroplasts and mitochondria, of metabolism and global circulation of the biological key elements C, N, and S, as well as of the organization, maintenance, and function of nuclear genetic information. In contrast, the heredity and molecular biology of organelles are generally treated as an adjunct, and neither goes as far as to describe the impact of the integrated genetic system.

In 1999 the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences celebrates thirty years of activity. For this celebration CISM has organized a series of courses and meetings on environmental problems, one of the leading subjects today of theoretical and applied research all over the world. The results obtained directly influence our daily life, particularly in applications for protection from pollution and natural hazards. Entstanden aus einer Pflichtvorlesung "EDV für Maschinenbauer" an der Technischen Universität Wien gibt das Buch Studenten und in der Praxis stehenden Technikern eine Einführung in die theoretischen Grundlagen der Informatik und der praktischen Anwendung, hier im speziellen im Maschinenbau. Nach der Vermittlung der notwendigen theoretischen Grundlagen wird anhand eines einfachen Programms die Problemanalyse mit den weiteren Schritten der Problembeschreibung, Programmierung und Implementierung erläutert. Mehrere technische Anwendungsbeispiele bieten einen Überblick in die Vielschichtigkeit integrierter technischer Systeme. Am Anfang war die Idee ... ... ein Buch uber NLP im Gesundheitswesen zu schreiben. Kurz danach fand der erste auf die Pflege abgestimmte NLP­ Practitioner statt - und einige der dabei tatiqen NLP-Traine­ rinnen und Trainer, namlich Martina Nachtsheim, Martin Salvenmoser und Alexander Seidl, treten in diesem Buch als Autorinnen und Autoren auf, wofur wir ihnen als Herausge­ berinnen herzlich danken. There has been recent rapid progress in the transformation of plants with foreign DNA, making use either of the natural routes of genetic invasion that viruses and bacteria have developed, or of chemical, mechanical and electrical tricks to make plant protoplast membranes permeable to nucleic acids. Genes integrated into plant virus genomes can be carried systemi­ cally from the initial site of infection into the rest of the plant. Genes placed between the borders of Agrobacterium tumefaciens T-DNA can be transferred into single cells or plant tissue, which then divides to produce wound calli, or as in the case of an Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection, grow out into new roots. Calli and roots can be grown into whole plants. If virus genomes are placed between the T-DNA borders, a very effective infectious route, termed "agroinfection", is established. Once inside a pro­ toplast, DNA finds its way into the nucleus where it can finally integrate into the resident chromosome and be expressed. Whether it can also find its way into chloroplasts is not yet clear, but at least translation products can be targeted into this organelle. Regeneration of whole organisms from single cells is a special feature of plants and offers a unique tool to study genes in a multicellular organism. In addition, as in animal cells, transcription and translation of trans­ forming genes can be studied in plant cells during "transient expression".

The XIV International Symposium on Brain Edema and Brain Tissue Injury took place in Warsaw, Poland, on 11¿14 June 2008. Two prominent members of the International Society for Brain Edema: Dr. Igor Klatzo and Dr. Julien Hoff have passed away after the last 2005 Symposium in Ann Arbor, USA. Dr. Igor Klatzo was actually the founder of the Society, and the Advisory Board decided to commemorate Dr. Igor Klatzo by introducing a lecture named after him to be given at the Symposium. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Reulen has been honored to give the frst Igor Klatzo lecture entitled ¿Bulk Flow and Diffusion revisited, and Clinical Applications¿. This volume contains 65 out of the 104 papers presented at the Symposium as lectures or posters. The topics of the Symposium were similar to those discussed at the previous ones. Many discussions focused on clinical work especially diagnosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, and traumatic brain injury. Diagnosis and therapy, including surgical methods, have also been verifed. Much attention was drawn to the application of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of posttr- matic intracranial hypertension. The pathomechanisms of brain edema and tissue injury studied in experimental models have been also presented.

Das Buch behandelt die Aufladung der Kolben-Verbrennungskraftmaschine. Dabei wird auf die Aufladegeräte und -systeme selbst, die theoretischen Zusammenhänge des Zusammenwirkens Motor und Auflade-Systeme sowie schlussendlich auf die Kriterien des Zusammenwirkens dieser System-Kombination ¿ unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Betriebsverhaltens ¿ eingegangen. Es werden neue Erkenntnisse bei der Entwicklung und Adaption von Aufladesystemen, neue Darstellungsformen sowie die heute angewandten Berechnungs- und Simulationsverfahren vorgestellt, mit Beispielen erläutert und bewertet. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet das Betriebs- und Regelverhalten aufgeladener Verbrennungsmotoren in den verschiedenen Anwendungs- bzw. Einsatzgebieten. Eine Reihe ausgewählter Anwendungsbeispiele sowie ein Ausblick auf mögliche Weiterentwicklungen des Systems "Auflade-Motor" beschließen die Abhandlung.

The small neck of the aneurysm afforded an easy surgical attack. An ordinary flat silver clip was placed over the sac and tightly compressed obliterated it completely. The clip was flush with the wall of the carotid artery. The sac, lateral to the silver clip, was then picked up with the forceps and thrombosed by the electocautery. Walter Dandy reporting his successful operation of a posterior communicating aneurysm on March 23, 1937. Walter Dandy's patient left the hospital in good health 2 weeks later, and from his report one may gain the impression that the operation was an easy task. Despite continuous developments during the following decades, it was not until the introduction of the operating microscope and microsurgical techniques that surgical treatment was generally accepted. During the microsurgical era surgical results have continued to improve due to diagnostical, neuroanaesthesi­ ological, and microsurgical refinements, and improved neurointensive care. Endovascular obliteration has become an important treatment alternative but this has not been included in this particular volume. The purpose of the present supplement of the ACTA NEUROCHIRURGICA is to review some of the elements in the neurosurgical management of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage that are important for a successful outcome. Professor Helge Nornes has been a major force in the development of new techniques and research strategies in this area for a number of years and has recently retired from the National Hospital in Oslo.

Recent advances in gene technology, plant transformation, and the growing knowledge of DNA sequences of plants as well as of their most important parasites and symbionts offer many interesting prospects for the breeding of new crop varieties. This was not only recognized by the major seed companies, but also by the governments of developing countries and by worldwide foundations supporting their agriculture. The know-how gained by the seed companies on crops important for the agricultural industry in developed countries could easily be provided for free to the international and national organizations dedicated to development of crops important in the third world. Results obtained worldwide become easily available to everybody through the scientific literature. Likewise, agricultural research in, e.g., the USA or Europe profits from the natural plant gene pool available in the third world. All this definitely provides for the possibility of fast change, new prosperity and security of food supply in the whole world, if properly applied. The fast development also asks for ethical and sociopolitical considerations, whereby not doing the right can be as much a mistake as doing the wrong.

As President and organiser of the 26th Congress of the International Society pf Blood Transfusion 'ISBT 2000', I am pleased to introduce this work on the biochemistry of human blood groups, which will serve as a valuable complement to blood group serology work. For this new edition the author has singlehandedly covered virtually all blood group research published before the current year. Five years have passed since publication of the first edition, and in this time research on the biochemistry of human blood groups has reached staggering proportions. Thanks to extensive molecular biological applications, research groups have identified the bearer molecules of even more blood groups, and are now able to clarify the molecular basis of a vast number of blood group specificities. Human blood group research has become one of the most fruitful of all biochemical research fields. While this development is immensely gratifying to a researcher like myself, who has worked in human blood groups for the past 34 years, coping with the close to overwhelming number of publications has proved a highly challenging task.

The first international symposium on brain edema was held in Vienna/ Austria in 1965 followed by altogether eight meetings since. The most recent was organized in Y okohama by the Department of Neurosurgery of the Musashino Red Cross Hospital, Tokyo. The continuing interest of both, clinicians and experimental scientists alike may be attributable to the fact that brain edema is a common denominator of many cerebral disorders, which under acute conditions threatens life and weIl-being of afflicted patients. Although progress in understanding as weIl as treatment can be recognized since 1965 many problems remain, particularly concerning the control of brain edema under acute conditions, as in trauma or ischemia. A quantum leap was the distinction of the cytotoxic and vasogenic brain edema prototypes as advanced by Igor Klatzo, providing for transition from a morphological to functional understanding now. The recent brain edema meetings were certainly benefiting from developments of both, molecular neurobiology on the one hand side and functional brain imaging at an ever-increasing resolution on the other, such as magnetic resonance imaging orpositron emission tomography. The international symposium in San Diego 1996 may witness further breakthroughs, hopefully also of effective treatment modalities. The symposium in Y okohama was dedicated to the "Legacy of 28 Years of Brain Edema Research" as a reminder of accomplishments as weIl as remaining challenges.

This book presents a perspective of network analysis as a tool to find and quantify significant structures in the interaction patterns between different types of  entities. Moreover, network analysis provides the basic means to relate these structures to properties of the entities. It has proven itself to be useful for the analysis of biological and social networks, but also for networks describing complex systems in economy, psychology, geography, and various other fields. Today, network analysis packages in the open-source platform R and other open-source software projects enable scientists from all fields to quickly apply network analytic methods to their data sets. Altogether, these applications offer such a wealth of network analytic methods that it can be overwhelming for someone just entering this field. This book provides a road map through this jungle of network analytic methods, offers advice on how to pick the best method for agiven network analytic project, and how to avoid common pitfalls. It introduces the methods which are most often used to analyze complex networks, e.g., different global network measures, types of random graph models, centrality indices, and networks motifs. In addition to introducing these methods, the central focus is on network analysis literacy - the competence to decide when to use which of these methods for which type of question. Furthermore, the book intends to increase the reader's competence to read original literature on network analysis by providing a glossary and intensive translation of formal notation and mathematical symbols in everyday speech. Different aspects of network analysis literacy - understanding formal definitions, programming tasks, or the analysis of structural measures and their interpretation - are deepened in various exercises with provided solutions. This book presents a perspective of network analysis as a tool to find and quantify significant structures in the interaction patterns between different types of  entities. ¿ Wie häufig sind psychogene Erkrankungen in der Erwachsenenbevölkerung? ¿ Wie verlaufen sie spontan, d. h. ohne Behandlung? ¿ Was beeinflußt die Entstehung dieser Erkrankungen und ihren weiteren Verlauf? Auf der Datenbasis der seit 1975 laufenden Mannheimer Kohortenstudie wird der Langzeitverlauf psychischer und psychosomatischer Erkrankungen beschrieben. Zu diesen Störungen (Häufigkeit ca. 26 %), zählen z. B. Angsterkrankungen, depressive Erkrankungen, Persönlichkeitsstörungen und psychosomatische Körperbeschwerden. Zudem werden die psychosozialen Faktoren (Kindheit, Persönlichkeit, Sozialstatus) dargestellt, die Einfluss auf den Verlauf dieser Störungen nehmen. Diese Ergebnisse zum Langzeitverlauf sind absolut neu und bringen in einer wichtigen, lange umstrittenen Frage Klärung. For the third time now, experts in tourism from all over the world come to Innsbruck in order to exchange ideas, inform themselves and others about current developments and build a network of personal relations. The book covers selected problems in free surface flows. The topics range from linear and nonlinear gravity and capillary waves, thin film dynamics, equilibrium shape, stability, and dynamics of capillary surfaces to thermal Marangoni effects in several geometries. The fluid dynamical problems are supplemented by a review Eulerian based computational methods.

The 9th Eurographics workshop on Animation and Simulation was held on Au­ gust 31st -September 1st, 1998, at INESC Lisbon. The workshop was chaired by Bruno Arnaldi (IRISA Rennes, France) and Gerard Hegron (Ecole des Mines de Nantes, France). The local organizer Mario Rui Gomes (INESC Lisbon, Por­ tugal) notably contributed to provide a harmonious environment. The main theme of this seventh workshop was centered on Virtual Reality versus Anima­ tion and Simulation: from real time animation/simulation to physical perception of virtual environments. About twenty participants attended the workshop, rep­ resenting eight countries: France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Portugal, Germany and USA. The Program Committee selected eight papers among sub­ mitted papers. Thirteen minutes of presentation and fifteen minutes discussion time per paper was also planned; this approach succeeded in creating a stimu­ lating exchange atmosphere during the two days. Following five successful workshops in the previous five years, the Rendering Workshop is now well established as a major international forum and one of the most reputable events in the field of realistic image synthesis. Including the best 31 papers which were carefully evaluated out of 68 submissions the book gives an overview on hierarchical radiosity, Monte Carlo radiosity, wavelet radiosity, nondiffuse radiosity, and radiosity performance improvements. Various legal regulations on citizenship and employment are currently being debated and implemented across Europe, fuelled by a "politics of fear" propagated by mainstream and populist parties alike. In der überarbeiteten und erweiterten 4. Auflage werden die neusten statistischen Daten ebenso präsentiert wie die jüngsten Entwicklungen im Bereich der Therapie.

Seit dem Erscheinen des zweibändigen Standardwerkes von F. HoNCAMP, "Handbuch der Pflanzenernährung und Düngerlehre", sind mehr als dreißig Jahre vergangen. Bei den stürmischen Fortschritten auf allen Gebieten der Natur­ wissenschaften, insbesondere der Chemie, Pflanzenphysiologie, Biochemie, Bodenkunde und Technologie, ist dieses zur Zeit seines Erscheinens so aus­ gezeichnete Handbuch natürlich längst veraltet. Zweifellos besteht heute ein dringendes Bedürfnis nach einem ähnlichen Werk. Wenn wir von dem ursprünglichen Plan abgekommen sind, das HoNCAMP­ sche Handbuch in neuer Auflage zu bearbeiten, so vor allem deswegen, weil die tiefgreifende Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet eine völlig neue Gestaltung des Werkes geboten erscheinen ließ. Es gliedert sich nun in drei Bände. Band I behandelt im wesentlichen die physiologischen Grundlagen der Pflanzenernährung. Er enthält eine ausführliche und systematische Darstellung der eigentlichen Ernährungsphysiologie. Auf eine Erörterung der allgemeinen pflanzenphysiologischen Grundlagen konnte dabei verzichtet werden, weil im RuHLANDschEin "Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie" ein umfassendes und modernes Nachschlagewerk zur Verfügung steht. Band II beschäftigt sich mit dem Boden und den Düngemitteln. Unter Berücksichtigung der modernen Agrikulturchemie haben wir das heutige Wissen über den Boden als Standort und Nährstoffquelle der Pflanze unter den Verhält­ nissen der landwirtschaftlichen Praxis und des Gartenbaues bzw. des Forstwesens systematisch zusammengefaßt. Die folgenden Kapitel befassen sich mit der Beschreibung und Herstellung der verschiedenen Wirtschafts- und Handels­ düngemittel. Gerade auf diesem Gebiet bestehen in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur erhebliche Lücken, da keine größerenLehr- oder Handbücher vorhanden sind, die sich eingehender mit der Technologie der Düngemittel und der Düngung beschäftigen.

A variety of biological and social science data come in the form of cross-classified tables of counts, commonly referred to as contingency tables. Until recent years the statistical and computational techniques available for the analysis of cross-classified data were quite limited. This book presents some of the recent work on the statistical analysis of cross-classified data using longlinear models, especially in the multidimensional situation.
